Pointer Grain Free Stars with Country Vegetables

Most dog biscuit is wheat with something painted on the front of the bag. This one genuinely is not: the composition leads with sweet potato at 55%, and there is no grain, gluten, soya, egg or dairy anywhere in it — which makes it one of very few biscuits available in bulk that you can give a dog on an exclusion diet.

Pointer bake them on their own farm in Lincolnshire, longer than usual for extra crunch, in a star shape they say helps keep teeth clean and breath fresh. Behind the sweet potato come potato and pea starches, pea fibre and tapioca starch, then potato at 5%, linseed at 4%, pea at 2%, fresh carrot at 2% and olive oil at 1%. The analysis is protein 6%, fat 5%, crude fibre 3.5% and crude ash 4% — low protein for a treat, which is rather the point of a vegetable biscuit.

On what a plant-based treat is and is not. This is a complementary food, which is to say a treat, and at 6% protein it is doing no nutritional heavy lifting — fine, so long as you are not counting it as a meal top-up for a dog who is off their food. And 10kg is a catering box: it wants an airtight container and somewhere dry, because there are no preservatives in it to hold it together once the bag is open.
