All about this product

Product description

Collies, kelpies and half the crossbreeds in Britain carry a herding instinct with nowhere to point it, and a ball they can pick up is no answer at all, because a ball in the mouth ends the chase. An oversized ball cannot be picked up, so the game never stops: the dog noses, shoulders and drives it round the garden, which is the behaviour they were bred for and the reason it tires them so thoroughly.

Twenty minutes of driving a ball around works a dog harder than an hour of walking, because the effort is mental as much as physical. The dog is solving a problem that keeps moving away from them. A hand pump is included, so the ball packs down small between sessions and comes back up quickly, and it is listed as suitable for horses as well as dogs, which is where balls like this originally came from.

  • Oversized inflatable ball for chase-and-nudge play
  • Hand pump included
  • Three sizes: Extra Small 25cm, Small 45cm and Medium 55cm across
  • Two colourways: blue and orange, or yellow and blue
  • Suitable for dogs and for horses
  • Too large to be picked up, so the chase continues

It is inflatable, so it punctures. This is a herding toy rather than a chew toy: a dog who grabs and bites instead of nosing will flatten it, and a ball with a torn skin needs taking away rather than patching. Supervise every session, deflate it between uses if your dog is a chewer, and stop while they are still thinking, because herding games wind some dogs up rather than settling them.

What the sizes mean. Extra Small is 25cm across (about 10 inches) and suits small dogs up to roughly 10kg — dachshunds, terriers, small spaniels. Small is 45cm for medium dogs to about 25kg, and Medium is 55cm for the big shovers. Pick the one your dog cannot get their jaws round, and if in doubt go up.

Who it's for: High-drive herding breeds and any dog who would rather chase than fetch, with an owner and a garden that can keep up with them.

Why we chose it

A ball a dog can pick up ends the chase the moment it goes in the mouth. This one cannot be picked up, so the game never stops and the dog drives it round the garden with nose and shoulder. Pump included.

Common questions
How big is each size?

Extra Small is 25cm across (about 10 inches), Small is 45cm (about 18 inches) and Medium is 55cm (about 22 inches), all measured inflated. They weigh roughly 470g, 670g and 1kg.

Which size does my dog need?

One they cannot get their jaws round. Extra Small (25cm) suits small dogs up to about 10kg — dachshunds, terriers, small spaniels. Small (45cm) suits medium dogs to about 25kg, and Medium (55cm) the big shovers. If you are between two, go up.

Is a pump included?

Yes, a hand pump is in the box, so the ball packs down between sessions and comes back up in a few minutes.

Will it survive a chewer?

It is a pushing toy rather than a chew toy. Inflate it hard so there is no loose fabric to bite, keep play supervised, and take it away if the skin tears.

What is it made from?

Oxford Cloth.

Which size is right for a Border Collie?

The 45cm for most. A typical Border Collie is 14–20kg, so 45cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. One size covers the whole breed. Bred to move stock, so most take to a herding ball in the first session.

Which size is right for a Labrador Retriever?

The 55cm for most. A typical Labrador Retriever is 25–36kg, so 55cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. The breed runs 25–36kg and crosses a size step, so go by your own dog — smaller, up to 32kg: the 55cm; larger, over 32kg: a 65cm ball, which this one does not come in. Chasers rather than shovers; keep the first sessions short and it holds their interest.

Which size is right for a Cocker Spaniel?

The 45cm for most. A typical Cocker Spaniel is 13–14.5kg, so 45cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. One size covers the whole breed. Chasers rather than shovers; keep the first sessions short and it holds their interest.

Which size is right for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

The 45cm for most. A typical Staffordshire Bull Terrier is 11–17kg, so 45cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. One size covers the whole breed. Terriers bite before they push — if they get any grip on it at all, go up a size.

Which size is right for a Jack Russell Terrier?

The 25cm for most. A typical Jack Russell Terrier is 5–6kg, so 25cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. One size covers the whole breed. Terriers bite before they push — if they get any grip on it at all, go up a size.

Which size is right for a Miniature Dachshund?

The 25cm for most. A typical Miniature Dachshund is 4–5.5kg, so 25cm is the right ball: too big to get their jaws round, and light enough to push. One size covers the whole breed. Hounds are chasers, and a ball they can never catch keeps them going.
