A dog that's gone off its usual bowl doesn't always need a different food — sometimes it just needs the same bowl made more interesting, which is the whole job of a topper.

Nutriment's Freeze Dried Raw Topper is 95% lamb, freeze-dried rather than frozen, with small amounts of blueberry (1.5%), beet pulp (0.6%) and a scattering of nettle, rosehip, parsley, chamomile and lemon balm at 0.2% each. Because it's meant to be sprinkled rather than fed as a meal, it's concentrated: fat comes out at 63%, protein at 24%, with fibre at 3.5% and moisture down at 3.5%. Nutriment class it as complementary — a topper to boost an existing meal, not a standalone complete diet.

• Lamb 95%
• Blueberry 1.5%, beet pulp 0.6%
• Nettle, rosehip, parsley, chamomile, lemon balm at 0.2% each
• Protein 24%, fat 63%, fibre 3.5%, moisture 3.5%
• 50g pack, stored in a cupboard rather than a freezer
• A topper, not a complete meal on its own

Why the fat figure looks high. At 63% fat this reads much richer than a normal complete food, and that's because it's meant to be used a spoonful at a time on top of an existing meal, not measured out as a portion in its own right. Nutriment don't give a specific gram amount for topping — how much to use will depend on the size of the meal it's going on and how much extra interest your dog actually needs.

Who it's for: owners of a fussy eater who wants to make an existing meal more appealing, rather than anyone looking for a complete meal replacement.
