A completely meat-free complete food is a genuinely different proposition to a standard tin, and worth being upfront about rather than burying in the ingredients list — some owners are actively looking for exactly this, and others need to know before it lands in the bowl.

Lily's Kitchen's Rainbow Stew is built from Potatoes at 10%, Courgettes and Carrots at 6% each, Millet at 6%, Lentils at 3%, plus peas, pea protein, sunflower seeds and oil, minerals, yeast, chia seeds, algae and a range of named herbs. The analytical constituents are Crude Protein 6%, Crude Fat 4.2%, Crude Ash 2.1% and Crude Fibre 1.8%, at 99 kcal per 100g, in a 400g can, and Lily's Kitchen describe it as complete.

Before switching. Crude Protein 6% is notably lower than a typical meat-based complete wet food, because this recipe draws its protein from pulses and grains rather than meat. If you are moving a dog onto a meat-free diet, it is worth talking it through with your vet first, particularly for a puppy, a working dog or one with existing health conditions.

Who it's for: owners actively choosing a meat-free complete diet for their dog, rather than those looking for a plant-based treat alongside a meat-based main diet.
