Fetch has a season, and it ends the week the clocks go back. The dog is no less keen at half past four in December; you simply cannot see where the thing landed, and in wet grass at dusk neither can they. Most households quietly stop throwing anything from about November until March.

This is a flying disc with lights built into it. Kowloon make it from PE, which they describe as lightweight, safe and built for active dogs, and it charges over USB with the cable included rather than swallowing button cells. There are three lighting modes and a published runtime for each: more than 5 hours on a single lamp cycle, more than 4 hours on dual lamp cycles, and more than 3 hours on continuous flashing.

• USB rechargeable, charging cable included
• Single lamp cycle over 5 hours, dual lamp cycles over 4 hours, continuous flashing over 3 hours
• Made from PE, described by Kowloon as durable and lightweight
• Coloured LED lighting, for play after dark
• Parcel weight 0.24kg

No size is published. Kowloon supply no diameter, no thickness and no weight for the disc itself — the 0.24kg is the parcel — so there is nothing here to tell you whether it suits a spaniel or a great dane, and on a flying disc that is not a small omission. The other thing worth saying plainly is that this one has a battery and a circuit inside it. It is a throwing toy rather than a chew, and it is not something to leave down with a dog who takes toys apart for a living.

Who it's for: dogs that still need a proper run through the winter, owners walking on playing fields, beaches and parks after dark, and anyone whose dog has quietly given up retrieving because the toy vanishes at dusk.
