Full description

A recipe name can sound more precise than the ingredient list behind it, so the useful comparison starts with the label rather than the front of the bag.

Harringtons Adult Dog Chicken & Rice is complete dry dog food in a 1.7KG bag. Chicken and meat meals make up 28%, including 7% dried chicken and 4% freshly prepared chicken. The recipe also lists maize, barley, 5.6% rice, 10% oats and a 1.8% omega blend. Its analysis gives 21% protein, 11% fat, 2.5% crude fibre and 8.5% crude ash. Harringtons describes it as suitable from 8 weeks onwards.

Read past the chicken-and-rice name. The recipe also contains maize, barley and oats, while rice is declared at 5.6%. It is not presented here as a single-protein or grain-free food, and the feeding amount still needs to follow the dog's weight, age, breed and activity.

Why we chose it

The 28% chicken and meat meal declaration is the deciding detail because it gives the flavour name some useful context. I also like that the protein, fat, fibre and ash figures are all published for comparison.
