Full description

A tray of wet food looks like a meal, so that is how it gets served. It has the right amount in it, it smells like dinner, the dog empties it and everybody is satisfied — and for a good number of the trays sold in this country, that is not what the manufacturer intended at all. The word that settles it is printed on the box in the smallest type on it.

Forthglade are clear about this one: it is a complementary food, and their own instruction is to add a quality mixer biscuit for a balanced meal, or use it as a topper over dry food. The case holds 12 trays of 395G split three ways — four chicken, four turkey, four chicken and liver. The chicken and the turkey trays are 90% of that meat plus minerals; the chicken and liver tray is 85% chicken with 5% chicken liver. Everything is gently steamed, grain free, and Forthglade put the range at dogs from 2 months upwards.

12 x 395G trays: four chicken, four turkey, four chicken and liver
Complementary, not complete — Forthglade say to add a mixer biscuit for a balanced meal
Chicken and turkey trays: that meat at 90%, plus minerals
Chicken and liver tray: chicken 85% with chicken liver 5%
Crude protein 11.5%, crude oils and fats 8.5%, crude ash 4%, moisture 75% (the turkey tray is 8% oils and fats)
Grain free, for dogs from 2 months; refrigerate after opening and use within 48 hours

Complementary is not complete, and the name is doing some work too. Fed on its own, meal after meal, this is not designed to supply everything a dog needs — Forthglade say to put it over a mixer or a dry food, and that instruction is the product working as intended rather than an upsell. Worth reading the "Just 90%" on the front carefully as well: it describes the meat total, not one ingredient, so the chicken and liver tray is 85% chicken with 5% liver rather than 90% of either. That also means this case is not a single-protein food, and it is no use at all to anyone trying to keep a dog off chicken.

Who it's for: owners feeding a dry food who want something over the top of it, dogs that have gone off plain kibble, and anyone wanting to find out which of three poultry recipes their dog will actually finish.

Why we chose it

A multicase is the cheapest way to find out which of three recipes a dog will actually eat, which beats any amount of describing them. We buy the twelve rather than singles because that is where the price per tray drops far enough to matter. Trays also stack and travel better than most things in wet food, which keeps the cost of getting it to you down.
