Recall is trained at distance, and distance is exactly what you cannot safely give a dog you are not yet sure of. A long line bridges that gap. Your dog gets to range, sniff and come back of their own accord, while you keep a physical connection for the times the recall does not land. It is the single most useful piece of kit for the stage between the back garden and full off-lead freedom.

The strap is 8 mm webbing with reflective thread run through it, so the line shows up in a torch beam or a set of headlights on a winter morning when you have lost track of where it has gone. Three lengths are offered, at 10, 15 and 20 metres, each with a single clip at the end. Flat webbing is a deliberate choice: rope at this length knots and cuts into a hand, while webbing lies flat and gathers without tangling.

Use it on a harness, never a collar. A dog hitting the end of 20 metres at a run generates more than enough force to injure a neck, and the same physics apply to a line wrapped round your hand or your legs. Wear gloves, let the line run loose on the ground, and never tie it off to anything. Start with the 10 metre anywhere there are other people about; 20 metres is an open-field length.
