Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.

How to measure

Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Short-coated dogs lose heat from the head and ears faster than most owners expect, and on a raw January morning that is the difference between a walk they enjoy and one they endure. A knitted hat is a small fix for it. This one is worked in a windproof knit with a row of soft spines running along the crown, so it does something as well as looking like something.

It pulls on over the head and sits behind the ears, and the knit has enough give to stay put without gripping. There is no hard structure anywhere in it, so nothing digs in when your dog shakes. The same style comes as a fox, a white rabbit, a black cow and a Master Yoda version, in small, medium and large, which is worth knowing if the dinosaur is not the one that suits your dog's face.
