Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.
How to measure
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
- If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Full description
There is a real difference between a coat and a jumper, and it is worth choosing on purpose. A quilted coat is the right answer to wind and wet; a thick knit like this one is the right answer to a cold, dry morning, because it holds warm air in the fibres and breathes rather than sealing damp against the skin. On a frosty walk across a park, the knit is the more comfortable of the two.
It is a heavy knit in a classic tartan, cut as a pull-on with a hood that covers the ears and the back of the neck. Pull-on styles have one clear advantage over the fastening kind: there is nothing to work loose halfway around the block, and no clips or buckles sitting against the chest of a dog who lies down a lot. The trade-off is that it goes over the head, which suits most dogs and suits a few not at all.
