There is one specific noise dogs love and owners hate, and it is the sound of a newspaper being destroyed. This gives them the noise without the confetti: a plush newspaper with a crinkle layer sewn inside that creaks and rustles under a paw, plus a squeaker hidden in the middle for when the crinkling stops being enough on its own. Flat and easy to grab, so it works for fetch and tug too.

Crinkle and squeak work on different instincts, which is why toys with both hold attention longer than toys with either. The crinkle rewards mouthing and pawing, which is quiet, repetitive, self-directed play a dog can do alone, while the squeak is the prey noise that triggers the shake. The fabric is bite-resistant and washable, so the toy goes through the machine when it starts to smell rather than into the bin, and the flat shape suits a small mouth carrying it about.

• Crinkle layer that creaks like real paper
• Hidden squeaker inside
• Soft, bite-resistant fabric
• Machine washable
• Flat shape that small and medium dogs can pick up easily
• Suits fetch, tug and solo chewing

On what you receive, and on chewing. And this is a plush toy rather than a chew: bite-resistant is not indestructible, so supervise play and take it away once the seams open, before the crinkle film and the squeaker are exposed.

Who it's for: Small and medium dogs who love a noisy toy, and households where the actual newspaper keeps going missing.
