Full description

A puppy that is going to end up a large or giant breed can put on more bodyweight in its first year than it will ever gain again, and how fast that happens matters to a growing skeleton nearly as much as how much it eats.

This recipe is Barking Heads' large-breed puppy formula, built around freshly prepared turkey at 60% of the total (33% fresh, 23% dried, plus turkey gravy), with sweet potato and peas for the bulk of the rest. Calcium is set at 1.4% and phosphorus at 1%, and glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and beta glucans are included for joint development. The recipe is grain-free.

On sizing this to your puppy. This recipe is formulated for large-breed puppies specifically - Barking Heads don't publish a general weight-based feeding table for it, only their online calculator, which asks for your puppy's age and expected adult weight. If you're not sure whether your puppy will grow into a large breed, that's worth checking with a vet or breeder rather than guessing from the bag.

Who it's for: owners of large-breed puppies who want calcium and phosphorus levels set for a large-breed growth stage, and a grain-free recipe rather than the standard growth formula most puppy foods use.

Barking Heads Big Foot Puppy Turkey

Why we chose it

Large-breed puppy food is a narrower category than it sounds, and this is one of the few we could find with calcium and phosphorus figures actually printed rather than left off the label entirely. It's grain-free too, which some large-breed puppy owners specifically go looking for.
