Dogs tend to get fussier about food as they get older, not less, and the harder problem for anyone feeding a senior dog is that they usually need fewer calories at exactly the point they're becoming pickier about eating them.

Autarky's answer here is a salmon recipe formulated for dogs typically over 7 years old, with a moderate protein and oil content to suit an older dog's lower energy needs. Salmon makes up a minimum of 26% of it, though poultry meal is also in the composition, so this isn't an entirely fish-based recipe despite the name on the front. Feeding is given as two separate daily guides for the same bodyweight - an "active" amount and a lower "lite" amount - so you choose based on how active your dog still is rather than being forced into one number.

• Salmon minimum 26%, with poultry meal also in the mix
• Protein 22%, oil 5%, fibre 6.5%, ash 5.5%
• Complete food for dogs typically over 7 years old
• Glucosamine added, plus milk thistle, yucca and a range of herbs
• Separate active and lite feeding guides by bodyweight
• 12kg bag

On the name. "Succulent Salmon" describes the headline protein, not the whole recipe - poultry meal is also listed in the composition, at a percentage Autarky doesn't publish. If you're avoiding poultry specifically, this recipe won't work for you even though salmon is the ingredient named up front.

Who it's for: owners of older dogs, typically over 7, who want a lower-calorie recipe built around salmon rather than a standard adult formula - particularly if your dog is still reasonably active and you'd rather use the higher of the two feeding guides than switch foods entirely.
