Large breed food differs from ordinary adult food in two ways that matter, and neither of them is marketing. The kibble is bigger, which slows down a dog who would otherwise inhale a bowl in forty seconds, and the joint ingredients are lifted, because a big dog carries more weight through the same joints for the same number of years.

Chicken is 30% of it — dried chicken at 25% and fresh at 5% — with rice at 24% and maize behind it. Arden Grange declare the joint ingredients by weight: glucosamine at 740mg/kg, MSM at 740mg/kg and chondroitin sulphate at 520mg/kg, plus prebiotic FOS at 900mg/kg and dried cranberries at 400mg/kg. The analysis is crude protein 24%, crude fat 14%, crude ash 7% and crude fibre 2.5%, with omega-6 at 2.98% and omega-3 at 0.49%. There is no added wheat, gluten, soy or dairy.

Bigger kibble helps a fast eater, but it is not a bloat prevention. Slowing a dog down is sensible and this does it — but if your dog is a deep-chested breed and bloat is the worry, that is a conversation to have properly with your vet rather than something a kibble size solves. It contains rice and maize, so it is not a bag for a dog with a diagnosed grain problem, though for most large dogs grain is not the issue.

Who it's for: adult large breeds — labradors, shepherds, retrievers, boxers — particularly ones who eat too fast and are heading towards the age where joints start to matter.
