On that 50kg figure
Ancol quote a maximum weight of 50kg for this lead and nothing supplied to us says what is being weighed — whether it is the dog the lead is rated for or a load the leather is tested to. If you have a heavy dog that leans into the lead, that ambiguity is worth resolving with Ancol before you rely on it. There is also no care instruction published for the leather anywhere in what we have been given: the 3M treatment is described as resisting stains, which is a different claim from being waterproof.
Why we chose it
Stitching down both sides is what the money actually buys here, and it is the part of a lead that sets how long the thing survives. This is the metre in 19mm, which is the everyday walking length rather than a training one. It is light and posts flat, so something hand-made in the UK costs very little to get to your door.

Size guide & how to measure
Leads are chosen by length and width rather than your pet’s body size. Pick the width to suit your pet’s strength and the length to suit how you walk.
How to measure
- Width: lighter, narrower webbing for small dogs; wider, thicker webbing for strong pullers and larger dogs.
- Standard lead (1.2–1.5 m): everyday pavement walks and training.
- Long line (3–10 m): recall practice and open spaces.
- Short / traffic lead (under 1 m): close control in busy areas.
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| Under 1 m | Traffic / close control |
| 1.2–1.5 m | Everyday walks (most popular) |
| 1.8–2 m | Relaxed walks, more freedom |
| 3 m + | Recall training, open spaces |
Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact length and width.

Full description
A lead almost never fails in the middle of the strap. It goes where one material meets another — at the stitching, or at the clip — which is why the interesting part of a lead's specification is rarely the material everybody talks about. It is how the thing is put together, and that is the part most descriptions skip straight past.
Ancol's Timberwolf lead is top-grain bridle leather, hand-crafted by their own workforce in the UK, and their argument for that leather is that it is strong while staying supple, softening with use without going slack. It is sewn down both sides with industrial nylon bonded thread rather than along one edge, treated with 3M leather protector to resist staining from water, dirt and oil, and finished with a trigger hook so it clips straight to a collar. This one measures 1m by 19mm.

Who it's for: owners of a settled walker who want a lead that lasts years rather than seasons, and anyone replacing a nylon lead that has gone stiff, frayed or smelly.

Common questions
How long and how wide is it?
1m long and 19mm wide.
What leather is used?
Top-grain bridle leather, which Ancol hand-craft in the UK. They describe it as strong but supple, softening over time while staying sturdy.
What does the 50kg refer to?
Ancol quote a maximum weight of 50kg and do not say in anything supplied to us whether that is the dog's weight or a tested load. For a large or hard-pulling dog it is worth checking with Ancol rather than assuming.
How does it fasten to the collar?
A trigger hook, so it clips on one-handed.
What colours is the Timberwolf lead made in?
Ancol make the range in sable, grey, blue and mustard, with matching collars in the same style. This listing is the sable.
