A blade that runs hot is the most common reason a groom goes wrong. The dog begins to fidget, then flinches from the clipper altogether, and the association sticks for the next appointment as much as for this one. Cooling the blade takes a couple of seconds when the can is on the table beside you, and the same press does four other jobs at the same time.

Those five jobs are cleaning, disinfecting, cooling, lubricating and protecting. Hair and dust cleared from between the teeth is what stops the blade dragging; a light film of oil is what stops it heating up again ten minutes later; and the residue left behind is what keeps rust off a blade that has been through a damp coat. Doing all of it in one spray matters mainly because a five-step routine gets skipped and a one-step routine does not.

Handle it like the aerosol it is. Spray the blade and not the animal, and do it away from the dog's face, because the propellant is cold and the noise alone will unsettle a nervous dog if you do it over their head. Let the blade sit for a moment before it goes back onto the coat so it is not wet against skin. Store the can away from heat and out of reach of children and pets.
