Kitten food without chicken
Chicken-free kitten food replaces chicken with a different named protein, such as fish, turkey or lamb, and is chosen most often when a kitten shows a suspected sensitivity to chicken specifically. Whatever the protein source, a kitten's food needs to be a complete, properly formulated kitten diet, not simply an adult food with chicken removed.
Why an owner looks for chicken-free specifically
Chicken is one of the most commonly used proteins in cat food, so it is also one of the more frequent triggers when a food sensitivity does show up, simply through repeated exposure. A kitten with ongoing digestive upset or itchy skin that does not settle is the usual reason an owner starts looking at chicken specifically.
That said, a genuine allergy in a kitten this young is less common than a simple sensitivity to a sudden change of food, so it is worth ruling out other causes, ideally with your vet's input, before settling on chicken as the specific issue.
Reading the label properly
Chicken can appear as chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken derivatives, or folded into a general poultry meal that does not name the bird specifically. All of these need to be absent for a food to be genuinely chicken-free, not just the word chicken on the front of the pack.
A label that lists poultry meal without naming the source cannot be relied on to be chicken-free, since chicken is usually the most common bird used in that kind of blend. Contact the manufacturer directly if you need certainty on a specific product.
Making sure it is still right for a kitten
Whatever protein a food is built around, it needs to be formulated specifically for kittens, since their nutritional needs, particularly for growth, differ meaningfully from an adult cat's. A chicken-free adult food is not a substitute for a chicken-free kitten food, even if the ingredients look similar.
Check that the food is labelled complete and suitable for kittens specifically, not just chicken-free, since those are two separate things a label needs to get right at the same time.
Switching a kitten's food
Introduce a new food gradually over about a week, mixing in increasing amounts alongside the old food, rather than switching all at once. A kitten's digestion is easily upset by a sudden change, whatever the two foods contain.
If symptoms persist after a full switch to a chicken-free diet, that points to something other than chicken, or a cause unrelated to food altogether, and is worth taking back to your vet rather than trying yet another protein.

- No. Chicken-free excludes chicken and its derivatives specifically, while grain-free excludes cereal ingredients such as wheat and maize. A food can be one without the other, so check the actual ingredients list rather than assuming either label covers both.
- Can a kitten be allergic to chicken but fine with fish?
- Yes, this is common. A sensitivity or allergy is usually specific to one protein rather than to meat in general, which is exactly why switching to a different named protein such as fish or turkey is the usual first step.
- How do I know if my kitten actually has a chicken allergy?
- The reliable way is a proper elimination diet run with your vet's guidance, feeding a single novel protein for a set period before reintroducing chicken to see if symptoms return. Guessing from symptoms alone is not a reliable way to confirm the trigger.
