Can gerbils eat oats?

Yes, gerbils can eat plain oats, and a small amount makes a reasonable addition to their diet. Oats are not toxic and many gerbils enjoy them, but they should sit alongside a proper gerbil mix rather than replace it, since oats alone do not cover everything a gerbil needs.

Why plain oats are fine in small amounts

Oats are a common ingredient in commercial gerbil and small animal mixes already, so offering a small amount of plain oats separately is not introducing anything unfamiliar to their diet. They are a reasonable source of fibre and carbohydrate for a gerbil's energetic lifestyle.

The word plain matters here. Porridge oats with added sugar, flavouring, or milk are not suitable, and instant oat sachets marketed for people almost always carry ingredients beyond plain oats that a gerbil does not need and should not have.

Gerbils are naturally active, inquisitive animals with a fast metabolism, and a varied diet built around a good mix with occasional safe extras like oats suits that lifestyle better than a very restricted, single-ingredient diet would.

How to offer them safely

A small pinch of dry, plain rolled or whole oats, offered a couple of times a week rather than daily, is enough to add variety without unbalancing a diet that should mostly be a proper gerbil mix.

There is no need to cook the oats. Dry oats are simple to handle, store well, and are how most gerbils encounter them within a standard seed mix anyway.

Offering oats loose in a shallow dish, rather than scattered through the bedding, makes it noticeably easier to see how much your gerbil actually eats and to remove anything left uneaten before it can spoil or attract pests.

What to watch for, and when to get advice

Watch for a gerbil who stops eating, seems unusually quiet, or whose droppings change after trying a new food. Gerbils are generally hardy, but any of these signs after a dietary change is worth taking seriously.

Ring your vet if your gerbil seems unwell in any way. This page is general information rather than veterinary advice and cannot replace an examination by a vet who knows your gerbil.

It helps to note roughly how much your gerbil ate and when, particularly if you suspect the oats might have been stale or damp, since that changes how likely it is to be the cause of any change you notice.

What else to feed

A good quality gerbil mix should form the bulk of their diet, and this usually already contains oats among other seeds and grains, so a separate handful is a small top-up rather than a necessity.

A dedicated small animal treat is a simple way to add variety beyond a seed mix, alongside the occasional small piece of fresh vegetable introduced gradually.

Fresh water should be available at all times, and any dry food, oats included, should be kept somewhere dry to avoid it going mouldy in the cage, which is a risk to a gerbil's health if eaten.

Common questions

Can gerbils eat porridge oats made with milk?
No, it is better to stick to plain, dry oats. Cooked porridge, especially made with milk or with added sugar, is not suitable for a gerbil's diet and offers nothing that plain dry oats do not already provide more safely.
How many oats can a gerbil eat?
A small pinch, offered a couple of times a week, is plenty. Oats should supplement a proper gerbil mix rather than replace it, since a mix already covers most of what a gerbil needs day to day.
Do gerbils already get oats in their normal food?
Usually yes. Most commercial gerbil and small animal mixes already contain oats among other seeds and grains, so offering extra oats separately is a small addition rather than introducing something new to the diet.
Can baby gerbils eat oats?
Very young gerbils should stay on their mother's milk and then transition to a standard gerbil mix as they wean. Introduce any extra food like oats gradually once they are established on solid food, and ask your vet if unsure.
How can I tell if my gerbil's food has gone mouldy?
Look for a musty smell, a change in colour, or damp, clumped food, all of which mean it should be thrown away rather than offered. Storing dry food such as oats or seed mix somewhere cool and dry helps prevent this happening in the first place.
