Gently cooked cat food
Gently cooked cat food is prepared at a lower temperature than standard wet food processing, aiming to retain more of the meat's natural texture and nutrients than a fully retorted tin or pouch. It usually comes frozen or chilled rather than shelf-stable, which is the main practical difference an owner needs to plan around.
You might also want to browse water fountains for cats and lickable cat treats.
How it differs from standard wet and dry food
Standard tinned and pouched cat food is cooked at high heat as part of the canning or retort process, which makes it shelf-stable at room temperature until opened. Gently cooked food uses a lower-temperature cooking method and is typically sold frozen, needing thawing before serving and refrigeration once opened, closer to how you'd handle raw or fresh meat.
Dry food is a different product altogether — much lower in moisture, shelf-stable by design, and processed at high heat during manufacture. Gently cooked food sits closer to wet food in moisture content and feeding behaviour, just prepared differently.
What changes in practice: storage
Because it is usually sold frozen, gently cooked food needs freezer space and forward planning to thaw a portion in the fridge ahead of a meal, rather than being grabbed from a cupboard shelf. Once thawed, it typically needs using within a day or two, similar to how you'd treat fresh raw meat.
This is a genuine practical trade-off compared with a tin or pouch that can sit in a cupboard indefinitely until opened — worth considering if freezer space or forward planning is limited in your household.
What changes in practice: portioning and waste
Many gently cooked ranges come in individually portioned packs, which makes measuring out a meal straightforward and reduces the guesswork of dividing a larger tray. Because it doesn't carry the preservatives used in shelf-stable food, any thawed portion not eaten within the recommended window should be discarded rather than kept on the assumption it will still be fine.
If you're switching from dry or standard wet food, introduce gently cooked food gradually over a week or so, since a shift toward a fresher, higher-moisture diet can cause a temporary change in stool consistency while your cat's digestion adjusts.

Common questions
- Does gently cooked cat food need to be frozen?
- Most gently cooked ranges are sold frozen and need thawing in the fridge before serving, then using within a day or two once thawed. Check the specific product's storage instructions, as this can vary between brands.
- Is gently cooked food better than standard wet food?
- It's a different preparation method rather than a straightforward upgrade — some owners prefer the texture and lower processing, while standard wet food is more convenient to store and just as capable of being a complete, balanced diet. Both can suit a cat well.
- Can I mix gently cooked food with dry food?
- Yes, many owners feed a mix of wet or gently cooked food alongside dry food. Introduce any new food gradually and keep portions balanced against your cat's total daily calorie needs rather than simply adding it on top.
