Steps come into their own for small breeds that simply can’t reach the sofa, and for senior or injured dogs whose joints no longer cope with jumping down. Repeatedly leaping off furniture is a common, overlooked cause of strains and worn joints, so a couple of steps can quietly prevent problems before they start as well as helping dogs already in difficulty.

Compared with a ramp, steps take up much less floor space and many dogs find them more intuitive — they climb stairs every day. The trade-off is that each step still asks the dog to lift its weight upward, so for very stiff hindquarters or long-backed breeds a ramp may be gentler. For most small and ageing dogs, well-sized steps strike the right balance.

Match the total step height to the furniture, and look for shallow risers so each climb is easy on tired joints. Stability is non-negotiable: a wobbly set will frighten a hesitant dog into refusing it, so choose steps with a non-slip base, grippy treads and a sturdy frame that won’t shift as the dog moves.

Soft foam steps are warm, lightweight and forgiving on paws and elbows, with a washable cover for the inevitable muddy days — ideal beside a bed. Rigid plastic or timber steps carry more weight and wipe clean easily, suiting larger dogs or use by the car. Whichever you pick, a few treats placed on each tread will have most dogs using them within minutes.
