Dog food with no chicken

Chicken-free dog food is sought out mainly by owners managing a suspected or diagnosed chicken sensitivity, since chicken is one of the more common proteins reported in canine food allergies simply because it appears so widely across the market. A chicken-free recipe swaps in a different named protein — commonly fish, lamb, duck or venison — but checking the full ingredients list matters, because chicken can appear in less obvious forms like chicken fat or chicken meal.

Why owners look for chicken-free food

A true food allergy to any specific protein is possible in dogs, and chicken is reported reasonably often, likely in part because it is such a widely used ingredient across the pet food market generally — more exposure across a dog's life can mean more opportunity for a sensitivity to develop to that particular protein. This does not mean chicken is inherently more allergenic than other proteins, simply that it turns up more often in reports because so many dogs eat it regularly.

A genuine food allergy is different from a general sensitive stomach, and the two are sometimes confused. If your dog has diarrhoea, vomiting or skin issues that you suspect are diet-related, a vet can help establish whether chicken specifically is the likely cause through examination and, where appropriate, an elimination trial.

How to check a label properly

Chicken can appear in a recipe in more than one form, including chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver or chicken broth, and a recipe advertised around a different named protein on the front of the pack can still contain a smaller amount of chicken further down the ingredients list. Reading the full list rather than trusting the flavour name alone is the reliable way to confirm a food is genuinely chicken-free.

Cross-contamination during manufacturing is also worth being aware of if your dog has a severe, diagnosed allergy, since a facility that processes multiple recipes including chicken-based ones may not guarantee a completely chicken-free product even when chicken is not a listed ingredient. If this level of certainty matters, ask the manufacturer directly about their production process.

What we stock

Our range includes dry and wet dog foods built around fish, lamb, duck and other named proteins as an alternative to chicken-based recipes, alongside limited-ingredient sensitive formulas. What is shown in the grid above reflects what is currently available to order.

If you suspect your dog has a chicken allergy but have not had it confirmed, speak to your vet before committing to a long-term chicken-free diet, since a proper elimination trial gives a more reliable answer than switching food and hoping symptoms improve.

Common questions

Is chicken bad for dogs?
No, chicken is a perfectly good protein source for the vast majority of dogs and is used widely across the pet food market for that reason. It only becomes a problem for the smaller number of dogs with a specific diagnosed or suspected sensitivity to it.
How do I know if my dog is allergic to chicken?
Signs can include skin itching, ear problems or digestive upset, but these overlap with other causes, so a vet examination and often a proper elimination diet trial is the reliable way to confirm chicken specifically is the trigger, rather than guessing from symptoms alone.
Does chicken-free mean the food has no chicken at all in any form?
It should mean chicken and chicken derivatives such as chicken meal or fat are not listed ingredients, but always check the full ingredients list to confirm, since a recipe named after a different protein can still contain a smaller amount of chicken further down the list.
What proteins are commonly used instead of chicken?
Fish, lamb, duck and venison are among the more common alternative named proteins used in chicken-free recipes. Which one suits your dog best depends on their individual needs and, where a diagnosed allergy is involved, guidance from your vet.
