Who makes Frontline?
Frontline is manufactured by Elanco Animal Health. The brand has changed hands more than once over the years: it was originally developed by Merial, a French animal health company, which was later acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim. Boehringer Ingelheim's animal health business, including the Frontline range, was subsequently sold to Elanco in 2020, and Elanco is the company behind the products on shelves today.
The ownership history in brief
Frontline started as a Merial product, and Merial built the brand into one of the best-known flea and tick treatment names for pets. When Boehringer Ingelheim acquired Merial, Frontline came with it as part of a much larger animal health portfolio.
Boehringer Ingelheim later divested its animal health business to Elanco in a deal completed in 2020, which is when Frontline moved to its current manufacturer. The formulations and branding most owners recognise have stayed broadly consistent through these changes in ownership.
What the range covers today
The Frontline name now covers more than one type of product, including spot-on treatments and other parasite-control formats for dogs and cats, and not every product under the name is available or classified in the same way. Always check the specific pack and follow its instructions, or ask a vet or pharmacist which product suits your pet.

Why the name has stayed recognisable through the changes
Despite three different corporate owners across its history, the Frontline branding, packaging style and core spot-on format have stayed broadly familiar to owners throughout, which is part of why the brand kept its position on shelves through each change of ownership rather than being folded into a different product line.
This kind of change of hands is fairly common in the animal health industry, where large companies regularly buy and sell entire portfolios of established brands rather than launching new ones from scratch, so a familiar pet product changing manufacturer without changing name is not unusual.
What this means for choosing a product
Knowing who currently makes a brand does not change how to choose the right product for your pet; that still comes down to your animal's species, weight and any specific advice from your vet or pharmacist about which formulation and pack size is appropriate.
If you have used a Frontline product before under a different name on the box, such as an older pack predating the Elanco ownership, the active approach behind the core spot-on range has remained consistent, though it is always worth checking the current packaging rather than assuming an older pack's instructions still apply.
