Best puppy food for a Cavapoo

A Cavapoo is a small-to-medium cross, usually landing somewhere between 5 and 11kg fully grown, so a small or medium-breed puppy food is the right starting point rather than anything formulated for large breeds. Beyond size, the two things worth paying attention to are a smaller kibble shape they can manage comfortably and, for puppies who inherit a Cavalier's tendency towards a sensitive stomach, a gentler recipe.

Feeding a Cavapoo

  • A small breed

An adult Cavapoo typically weighs 5–11kg, so a healthy Cavapoo eats a modest amount compared with other breeds. Every feeding guide on a bag is written per kilo of body weight, not per breed — start there, then adjust to the dog in front of you.

  • Life stage

A small breed is usually done growing at 10–12 months, which is roughly when a puppy food has finished its job. With a typical lifespan of 12–15 years, there is a long adult stretch in the middle; switch to a senior food when your vet thinks it is worth it rather than on a birthday.

  • Small mouths, crowded teeth

Smaller breeds get dental disease more often than big ones, largely because the same number of teeth are packed into a shorter jaw. Kibble size is worth checking, and a dental chew counts towards the daily 10% of calories from treats.

  • Mealtimes can do some of the work

A breed that struggles to settle on its own gets more out of a meal that takes effort — a lick mat, a snuffle mat or a puzzle feeder using part of the daily ration rather than extra food on top of it.

A guide, from the same rule of thumb our puppy growth predictor uses — each age is that share of the way to maturity for a small breed. Puppies grow fastest early, so a real puppy usually sits a little above the middle rows. Weigh yours and ask your vet if the number worries you.

Why size-appropriate puppy food matters here

Small and medium-breed puppy foods are formulated around a faster growth curve and higher metabolic rate than large-breed formulas need, and the kibble itself is usually a smaller size that is easier for a small mouth to manage. A Cavapoo puppy fed a large-breed formula is not being harmed by it, but the kibble size and growth-rate formulation are simply built for a different kind of dog.

Because Cavapoos vary in size depending on the mix of Cavalier and Poodle parentage, it is worth checking your puppy's expected adult weight with your breeder or vet and choosing a food matched to that, rather than assuming every Cavapoo needs the same thing.

The sensitive-stomach question

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed with a reputation for digestive sensitivity, and some Cavapoo puppies inherit that tendency. If your puppy has had loose stools on more than one food, or seems to react to ingredient changes more than littermates might, a sensitive-formula puppy food with a limited or named single protein is worth trying, introduced gradually as with any food change.

Not every Cavapoo has a sensitive stomach, and there is no need to pre-emptively choose a sensitive formula for a puppy who is doing fine on a standard small-breed recipe.

Feeding in practice

Follow the feeding guide for your puppy's current weight rather than their expected adult weight, and adjust as they grow. Small and toy-cross breeds can be prone to becoming overweight in adulthood, so establishing sensible portions early, rather than free-feeding, sets a good pattern.

Your vet or breeder is the best source for a feeding plan specific to your puppy, particularly if you are unsure how big they are likely to grow.

Common questions

Should I feed my Cavapoo puppy a small-breed or medium-breed food?
Either can work depending on where your particular Cavapoo is likely to land in the 5-11kg adult weight range. If you are unsure, a small-breed puppy food is the safer default for the smaller end of that range, and your breeder or vet can advise based on the parents' sizes.
Do Cavapoos need a hypoallergenic food?
Not automatically. Some Cavapoo puppies inherit a sensitive stomach from the Cavalier side of their parentage and do better on a limited-ingredient or single-protein food, but plenty do perfectly well on a standard small-breed puppy recipe. Watch your individual puppy rather than assuming either way.
When should a Cavapoo puppy move onto adult food?
Small and medium breeds typically move onto adult food somewhere around 10 to 12 months, earlier than a large breed would, but this varies by individual dog and by the specific food's guidance. Check with your vet if you are not sure your puppy is ready.
How many meals a day does a Cavapoo puppy need?
Young puppies generally need three to four smaller meals a day, reducing to two as they approach adulthood. Follow the specific guidance for your puppy's age and weight on the food you are using, and ask your vet if your puppy seems constantly hungry or is leaving food.
