Best dog food for a greyhound
A greyhound's lean build and fast metabolism mean they often need a more calorie-dense food than their slim look suggests, alongside a recipe gentle enough for the sensitive stomachs the breed is known for. Their thin coat also means a coat isn't optional in cold weather — that's a genuine breed need alongside the food itself, not an add-on.
Why greyhounds eat differently to how they look
A greyhound's low body fat and short, fine coat can make it easy to assume they need less food than a stockier dog of a similar height, but the opposite is often true. A lean, high-metabolism build burns through calories quickly, and an underweight greyhound is a more common problem in the breed than an overweight one.
Ribs that are easy to feel with a light covering of fat over them is the general look to aim for in a healthy adult greyhound, rather than the very lean, almost visible-ribbed appearance some people mistake for normal in the breed.
Sensitive stomachs are common in the breed
Many greyhounds, particularly those who have come from a racing or kennel background, have known sensitive stomachs, and a sudden change of food is more likely to unsettle them than it would a less sensitive breed. A recipe built around a single named protein and free of common triggers is a sensible starting point if your greyhound has a history of loose stools or food sensitivity.
Whatever recipe you choose, introduce it gradually over a week or more alongside their current food rather than switching overnight, which gives a sensitive stomach the best chance of adjusting without an upset.

Common questions
- Why is my greyhound so thin even though I feed them well?
- Greyhounds naturally carry less body fat than many breeds, and a light covering over visible ribs is often normal rather than a sign of underfeeding. If you are concerned your dog is genuinely underweight, or their weight has changed suddenly, speak to your vet rather than assuming it is just the breed.
- Do greyhounds need more food than other dogs their size?
- Often yes, relative to their appearance, because of their lean build and fast metabolism. Use the feeding guide on the bag as a starting point and adjust based on how your individual dog's body condition looks and feels, checking with your vet if you are unsure.
- Why do greyhounds wear coats?
- Their short coat and very low body fat mean they lose heat quickly, so a coat in cold or wet weather is a genuine comfort and welfare choice for the breed rather than just an accessory.
- Are ex-racing greyhounds' dietary needs different from a greyhound bred as a pet?
- Often, yes, at least to begin with — many ex-racers arrive on a kennel diet quite different from a typical complete dog food and can have a more sensitive stomach as a result. A gradual transition onto a new food, and dental care if it has been neglected, are both common early priorities for a retired racing greyhound.
