Best dry dog food for a cockapoo

There is no single dry food that suits every cockapoo, because a cockapoo is not one fixed size. As a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle of any of several sizes, cockapoos range from toy to standard, and the right food depends more on your dog's actual size and any known sensitivity than on the breed name on the label.

Feeding a Cockapoo

  • A small breed

An adult Cockapoo typically weighs 5–11 kg, so a healthy Cockapoo eats a modest amount compared with other breeds. Every feeding guide on a bag is written per kilo of body weight, not per breed — start there, then adjust to the dog in front of you.

  • Life stage

A small breed is usually done growing at 10–12 months, which is roughly when a puppy food has finished its job. With a typical lifespan of 12–15 years, there is a long adult stretch in the middle; switch to a senior food when your vet thinks it is worth it rather than on a birthday.

  • A high-energy dog eats like one

Cockapoos sit at the top end for energy, and a dog working through an hour and a half of real exercise a day burns through the feeding guide faster than a dog on a short stroll. Feed to the dog's condition, not to the middle of the range on the bag.

  • This breed tends to bolt its food

A food-motivated dog will empty a bowl in under a minute given the chance. A slow feeder or a puzzle bowl turns a meal back into something that takes time, and splitting the daily ration across two or three meals helps as well.

  • Small mouths, crowded teeth

Smaller breeds get dental disease more often than big ones, largely because the same number of teeth are packed into a shorter jaw. Kibble size is worth checking, and a dental chew counts towards the daily 10% of calories from treats.

  • Mealtimes can do some of the work

A breed that struggles to settle on its own gets more out of a meal that takes effort — a lick mat, a snuffle mat or a puzzle feeder using part of the daily ration rather than extra food on top of it.

Why cockapoo size varies so much

Cockapoos are not a breed with a fixed standard, so a toy cockapoo bred from a toy poodle can be a fraction of the size of a maxi cockapoo bred from a standard poodle. A food built for a small breed's faster metabolism and smaller kibble will not suit a bigger, more moderately-paced cockapoo, and vice versa.

The practical answer is to buy for your dog's actual adult weight rather than the breed name — a small or medium breed formula for most cockapoos, moving to a large breed food only if yours is genuinely at the bigger end of the range.

Coat and digestion: what cockapoo owners often look for

Cockapoos inherit traits from both parent breeds, and a soft, sensitive stomach or itchy skin is a common complaint among owners, though it is not universal — plenty of cockapoos do fine on a standard recipe. If your dog has a history of loose stools or skin irritation, a single-protein or limited-ingredient recipe makes it easier to work out what does and does not agree with them.

Grain-free is not automatically better for a sensitive stomach — what matters more is a named, single meat protein rather than a mix of several, so you can actually identify a trigger if one turns up.

Weight matters more than the bag

Cockapoos are often food-motivated and can put on weight quickly if their exercise does not match their intake, particularly the smaller and medium sizes. Following the feeding guide on the bag as a starting point and adjusting to keep a healthy body shape matters more than which specific brand you choose.

If your cockapoo is overweight or their weight is creeping up, cutting treats first and re-weighing food rather than guessing by eye is the more reliable fix, alongside a chat with your vet if it does not shift.

Common questions

Do cockapoos need grain-free food?
Not automatically. Grain-free is only useful if your particular dog reacts to grain, which is less common than marketing suggests. A named single-protein recipe is generally more useful for identifying a food sensitivity than removing grain alone.
What size kibble does a cockapoo need?
It depends on your cockapoo's actual size. A toy or mini cockapoo does better on a small breed kibble sized for their mouth, while a standard-sized cockapoo can usually manage a medium breed formula without any trouble.
Are cockapoos prone to food allergies?
Some are more prone to skin and digestive sensitivity than average, likely inherited from either parent breed, but it is not universal across the breed. If your dog shows itchy skin or ongoing loose stools, a limited-ingredient food and a conversation with your vet is the sensible next step.
How much should I feed my cockapoo?
Start with the feeding guide on the bag for your dog's current weight and activity level, then adjust based on their body condition rather than sticking rigidly to the guide. Cockapoos vary hugely in size, so a fixed daily amount for the breed does not exist.
