Fit and material for a strong, active dog
Dobermans are strong dogs with a muscular neck, and a collar needs to be genuinely well made rather than decorative if it is going to hold up to regular pulling on a lead or being grabbed during play. A sturdy webbing or leather collar with a solid, secure buckle is a sensible baseline.
Fit should allow two fingers to slide flat between the collar and the neck, snug enough not to slip over the head but loose enough not to press on the throat, and it is worth rechecking that fit periodically since an active dog's neck size can change slightly with muscle tone and weight.
A martingale as an alternative
Some owners of strong, athletic breeds prefer a martingale-style collar, which tightens slightly when a dog pulls back against it, reducing the chance of slipping out of a collar during a sudden movement without choking the dog the way a slip lead can. It is worth considering if your Doberman has ever managed to back out of a standard flat collar.

- It is not a legal requirement, but it is a genuinely useful feature for the breed given how dark most Dobermans' coats are. A reflective or hi-vis collar makes a real difference to how easily your dog can be seen by traffic during dawn, dusk or night walks.
- What size collar does a Doberman need?
- It depends on the individual dog, since there is a real size difference between a smaller female and a large male. Measure around the base of the neck where a collar would normally sit and check that measurement against the specific product's size guide rather than assuming a standard large size will fit.
- Is a martingale collar better than a flat collar for a Doberman?
