Tinned cat food

Tinned cat food is wet food sold in a metal can rather than a foil pouch or plastic tray, and the food inside is usually much the same complete recipe you would find in either of the other formats. What actually differs between them is practical: how the food stores once opened, how much is in a single serving, and how much packaging you end up with.

Tin, pouch or tray — what changes in practice

A tin typically holds more food than a single pouch, which suits multi-cat households or a cat with a bigger appetite better than working through several small pouches at each meal. Once opened, a tin needs decanting and covering or transferring to a container, whereas a pouch is usually sized for one meal and has nothing left over to store.

Trays sit somewhere between the two — often a single-meal portion like a pouch, but easier to reseal partially than a tin edge, and generally easier to recycle than either. None of the three formats is nutritionally better than the others by default; what is inside the packaging is what actually matters for your cat.

Storage and waste once it is open

An opened tin should go straight into the fridge, covered, and used within the timeframe stated on the label rather than left out at room temperature, the same rule that applies to any wet food. A resealable lid made for tins is a cheap way to avoid using cling film or a mismatched saucer every time.

If your cat regularly leaves half a tin, a smaller pouch format may waste less food overall even though the per-gram cost is often higher, so it is worth weighing genuine cost against what actually gets eaten rather than judging a format on the shelf price alone.

Portioning for the cat you actually have

A single tin can be more or less than one cat's daily wet food allowance depending on their size and how much dry food, if any, makes up the rest of their diet, so checking the feeding guide on the specific tin matters more than assuming a can equals a meal.

For a multi-cat household, a bigger tin split across bowls at a proper serving spoon or scale reading tends to work out cheaper per meal than buying everyone their own pouch, while a single-cat household often finds pouches or trays simpler to manage without leftovers.

Common questions

Is tinned cat food better than pouches?
Neither format is inherently better nutritionally — what matters is the actual recipe inside. Tins tend to suit bigger appetites or multi-cat households better, while pouches suit single-cat households wanting a portioned, no-leftover meal each time.
How long does an opened tin of cat food last in the fridge?
Check the specific product's label, since guidance varies, but as a general rule an opened tin should be covered, refrigerated straight away, and used within a day or two rather than left in the fridge indefinitely.
Can I leave tinned cat food out all day?
It is better not to. Wet food left at room temperature for extended periods can dry out, attract flies, and spoil faster than it would refrigerated, so remove what is not eaten within a reasonable time and refrigerate any leftovers covered.
Do tins create more waste than pouches?
Tins are usually more easily recycled through standard kerbside collection than a mixed-material pouch, though pouches can produce less food waste for a small cat who cannot finish a whole tin. Which matters more depends on your own household's habits.
