Leather dog collars
Leather is the collar to choose if you want something that holds up to years of daily wear rather than being replaced every season. Unlike nylon webbing, which frays under sustained pulling, leather softens and ages with use, so a well-made leather collar can genuinely outlast several cheaper alternatives, provided it's looked after.
Why leather lasts
Good leather is more resistant to the kind of wear a strong or persistent puller causes than woven nylon, which frays at stress points over time. It also holds a buckle and D-ring more securely over the long term, since the material doesn't stretch or thin the way synthetic webbing can.
The trade-off is cost and care — leather costs more upfront and needs occasional conditioning to stop it drying out and cracking, particularly if your dog swims or is walked in the rain often.
Caring for a leather collar
Wipe off mud and dirt after a walk rather than leaving it to dry in, and let a wet collar dry naturally away from direct heat, which can dry the leather out and make it brittle. An occasional leather conditioner keeps it supple, especially through winter when it's wet more often.
If your dog swims regularly, be aware that leather doesn't dry as quickly as nylon and can hold water against the skin for longer — check the fit hasn't shifted and the collar has properly dried out between wears.
Fit and sizing
Measure your dog's neck with a soft tape and check it against the product's size guide, since leather doesn't stretch the way nylon can to compensate for a slightly loose fit. You should be able to fit two fingers flat between the collar and your dog's neck.
New leather can feel stiffer than nylon at first and softens with wear, so check the fit again after the first couple of weeks rather than assuming the initial feel is how it will stay.
