All-weather dog coats
An all-weather dog coat is built to cope with rain and cold together, usually a waterproof or water-resistant outer layer with enough coverage to keep a dog's body dry on a wet walk. The right one depends far more on your dog's size, coat type and how they tolerate wearing clothing than on which one looks best.
What makes a coat genuinely weatherproof
A properly waterproof coat sheds rain rather than soaking it up, and coverage matters as much as material — a coat that stops short at the belly or doesn't reach far enough down the legs still leaves a dog wet and muddy underneath. Full-body and hooded designs extend that coverage further, useful for dogs who dislike rain on their face or ears.
Fastenings matter too: a coat that's quick to get on and off makes a real difference on a wet, muddy walk when you're not keen on fiddling with buckles in the rain, and a secure fit stops the coat twisting or riding up while your dog moves.
Getting the fit right
Measure your dog's length and girth rather than going by breed or weight alone, since coat sizing varies between makes and a dog with an unusual build for its size can fall between standard sizes. A coat that's too tight restricts movement and can chafe; one that's too loose lets rain in at the gaps and can catch on things during a walk.
If your dog has never worn a coat before, expect an adjustment period — let them wear it briefly indoors first rather than heading straight out on a long, wet walk in something unfamiliar.

- Does my dog actually need a coat in the rain?
- It depends on breed, coat type and how much time they spend outside — a thick double-coated breed often copes fine without one, while a short-coated, small or older dog can get cold and wet quickly and benefit genuinely from a waterproof layer. There's no single answer that fits every dog.
- How do I measure my dog for a coat?
- Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail for length, and around the widest part of the chest for girth, then check those measurements against the specific coat's size chart rather than assuming sizes are consistent between brands. A well-fitted coat should allow full, unrestricted movement.
