Thin-skinned, low-fat, short-coated breeds genuinely suffer in a British winter in a way that a labrador in full coat does not. A greyhound shivering on a January pavement is not being dramatic, it simply has almost no insulating layer of its own. A thickened, water-shedding coat is the difference between a walk that gets cut short after ten minutes and one you both finish.

This is the deep-chested cut rather than the boxy one: longer through the body and narrower across the ribs, which is why it is sold against names like greyhound, doberman and labrador rather than by chest girth alone. It comes in green or red, in five sizes from S through to 2XL. Colour is doing more than decoration here. Red stands out against a dark field at dusk, whilst green hides the mud between washes.

• Two colours: green or red
• Five sizes: S, M, L, XL and 2XL
• Cut for long-bodied, deep-chested dogs
• Thickened winter weight with a water-resistant outer
• Supplied as one coat

Worth knowing. The manufacturer supplies no size chart and no fabric detail whatsoever with this coat, and we would rather tell you that than invent a table of numbers. Treat the waterproof claim as shower-proof until we have had one out in real rain.

Who it's for: Greyhounds, whippets, lurchers, dobermans and other short-coated dogs who lose heat quickly, and owners who walk in the dark at both ends of a British winter day.
