Cat food storage
Once a bag of dry food is opened, it's exposed to air and moisture in a way the sealed packaging was designed to prevent, and that's where a proper storage container earns its keep. It's a small, unglamorous purchase, but it genuinely affects how fresh the last bowl from a bag tastes compared with the first.

Why storage matters more than it looks like it should
Dry food loses freshness gradually once opened, through exposure to air, light and moisture, and a clumsy clip on the original bag doesn't do much to stop that. An airtight container with a proper seal slows that process down, which matters most if you buy food in larger bags that take a few weeks to get through.
We stock a couple of dedicated pet food containers, including a high-capacity airtight tub and a waterproof box with a silicone-sealed lid and locking buckles, both built to take dry food for cats, dogs or birds rather than one species specifically.
How to choose one
Size is the main decision — buy for the bag size you actually use rather than guessing, since a container that's too small defeats the point and one that's too large just takes up extra cupboard space. A wide opening also makes scooping easier day to day than a narrow-necked container that needs tipping or shaking.
Beyond that, look for a genuinely airtight seal rather than just a lid that sits on top, since that's the whole reason to buy one over simply folding the original bag closed and hoping for the best.

Common questions
- Does dry cat food really go stale?
- Yes — once a bag is opened, exposure to air and moisture gradually affects both freshness and the fats in the food, which is one reason manufacturers print a short use-by window after opening. An airtight container slows that process considerably compared with leaving the bag loosely folded.
- Can I store wet food the same way?
- No, opened wet food should go in the fridge in a sealed container or with a pet food can cover, and be used within a day or two. The airtight tubs on this page are designed for dry food, not chilled storage.
- Is a bigger container always better?
- Not necessarily — match the container to how much food you buy at once rather than choosing the largest available. A container that's mostly empty air doesn't protect freshness any better than a well-fitted smaller one, and it takes up more space for no real benefit.
