Scratching is one of the few discomforts a dog cannot describe to you, so an owner is left reading the behaviour instead: a paw worried at constantly, a flank chewed bare, a dog that cannot settle. That is usually what sends someone looking for a skin supplement rather than a coat shampoo.

This is YuMOVE Skin & Coat Care Itching for Adult Dogs, previously sold as YuDERM Itching Dog under the same YuDerm brand. It is a 250ml pump of oils built around Omega-3 and Omega-6, given by pumping it directly onto the dog's food rather than mixed into water or applied to the skin. YuDerm's own guidance is that a difference can show in as little as three to six weeks of daily use, which is a longer commitment than a shampoo and a different kind of product entirely.

• 250ml or 500ml pump bottle
• Omega-3 and Omega-6 oil blend
• For adult dogs
• Given by pumping onto food, not applied to the skin
• YuDerm's own guidance: change may be seen in 3-6 weeks

One thing worth knowing. This is a food supplement, not a treatment for an infection, an allergy or a parasite. If the itching is sudden, one-sided, or comes with hair loss, redness or scabbing, that is a vet appointment rather than an oil to try first, since something else may be causing it that an oil cannot touch.

Who it's for: owners of an adult dog with a dry, flaky or itchy coat who are prepared to give it daily for several weeks, not owners looking for a same-day fix.
