Most cats want two things that seem to contradict each other: to be near the family, and to be out of sight. Put the bed in the spare room and it goes unused; put an open basket in the living room and the cat sleeps behind it instead. A den built into a piece of furniture that already belongs in the room solves both at once, because the hiding place ends up exactly where the household actually is.

Handwoven rattan does the quiet work here. The weave breathes, so warm air and sound pass through rather than sealing the cat in, and a cat inside can still hear the room without being part of it. The glass top keeps the piece honestly useful as a table, taking a lamp, a mug or a book without the wear a woven top would show, and the low round shape sits at roughly sofa-arm height rather than looming over it.

• Handwoven rattan body with a glass tabletop
• Enclosed den built into the base
• Low, round profile intended to sit beside a sofa
• Two colourways, grey and white
• Works as a genuine side table as well as a cat retreat

On measurements: Worth doing if your cat is large, or if you are matching the height of a particular sofa.

Who it's for: Cat owners in shared living spaces who want the hiding place and the furniture to be the same object.
