Cats and small dogs sleep curled, spine bent and nose tucked into the tail, and a flat mattress gives them nothing to curl against. The raised rim here is what makes the difference. It supports the head and the back at the same time, so the curl holds without the animal having to brace against anything, and that is the shape they settle into most deeply and stay in longest through the night.

Underneath the shape it is a deep plush-filled donut, soft enough to sink into and dense enough not to flatten out on the first night. The enclosing rim also does something useful for anxious animals. A bed with edges reads as a hollow rather than an open floor, and a nervous cat or a small dog who startles easily will nearly always choose the bed with sides over the one without, given both in the same room.

• Round nest bed with a raised bolster rim
• Deep plush filling
• Soft plush surface throughout
• Available in 40cm and 50cm
• Patterns include tiger stripe, grey-blue rhombus and gradient shades

On sizing: measure your pet curled up rather than stretched out, then allow a little extra. A nest bed is meant to be snug, but a pet whose back presses hard against the rim finds it too tight and will sleep on the floor beside it instead. Plush filling also compresses with use, so expect it to flatten slightly over the first few weeks and shake it back into shape between washes.

Who it's for: Cats and small dogs who curl to sleep, and nervous pets who settle far better with something around them.
