Long, floppy toys get a different game out of a dog than round ones do. There is a shake in them, a proper head-swinging thrash that a ball never provokes. The lizard runs to 45.7 centimetres and weighs only around 181 grams, so it flies when thrown and flaps satisfyingly when caught, and there is enough length in it for a dog to grab a limb rather than a mouthful of body.

Underneath the shape, the build is Tuffy's usual approach: layers of material bonded together, stitched through several rows at once, with webbing sewn along the seams. Ordinary plush has one layer and one line of stitching, which is precisely why a determined dog empties one in an evening. This squeaks, it floats, and it goes through the washing machine and air dries, which is what keeps a well-loved toy in circulation rather than in the bin.

Not indestructible, and the squeak is the target. Plenty of dogs go straight for the squeaker, so if yours is a committed de-squeaker, expect that part to go first even while the outer shell holds up perfectly well. Keep it to supervised play and retire it once an inner layer starts showing through the outside.
