The toys dogs actually carry around the house are almost always the light ones. A plush shaped like a crisp tube is easy for a dog to pick up by the middle, shake, and throw for themselves, and the squeaker inside gives them the feedback that makes them do it all over again. It is a toy for play and for comfort rather than a chew, and that distinction is worth holding onto.

The whole thing is machine washable, which is the real reason a plush toy lasts. Most of them are thrown away because they have become unpleasant rather than because anything has broken, so being able to run one through a wash cycle without it coming out as a felted lump adds months to its life. Six different sets are offered, each with its own cheeky flavour designs on the tube, so you can choose the look rather than accept whatever the warehouse sends. Light enough to live in a crate or a toy basket without taking over either.

• Crisp-tube shape, easy for a dog to carry and shake
• Built-in squeaker
• Soft plush throughout, machine washable
• Six sets to choose between
• Light enough for indoor play and crate company

Worth knowing. Their description mentions multiple sizes. What is actually listed is six different sets, not sizes, and no dimensions come with them. As with any plush, this is not a chew toy: a determined dog will open it, so supervise play and bin it once stuffing appears.

Who it's for: Dogs who carry, shake and squeak their toys rather than dismantle them, and owners who would sooner wash a toy than replace it.
