A biscuit shaped and finished like something from a bakery counter is at least half aimed at the person holding the bag. Dogs are indifferent to a swirl. People are not, which is why this sort of treat ends up being bought for other people's dogs more often than for the one at home.

The look here comes from swirls of yoghurt and carob marbled through the biscuit. The composition is cereals, various sugars, oils and fats, milk and milk derivatives, minerals and derivatives of vegetable origin. Protein is 9%, crude fat 14%, crude ash 5% and crude fibre 1%, and the energy figure is 378 kcal per 100g. They come five to a pack.

• Five biscuits per pack
• Marbled with yoghurt and carob
• Protein 9%, crude fat 14%, crude ash 5%, crude fibre 1%
• 378 kcal per 100g
• Cereals, various sugars, oils and fats, milk and milk derivatives, minerals
• Complementary treat rather than a meal

Sugars are the second ingredient. A composition is listed in descending order by weight, so various sugars sit behind only the cereals and ahead of the fats — and milk and milk derivatives are in there too, which rules these out for a dog that does badly on dairy. With crude fat at 14% and 378 kcal per 100g, this is an occasion biscuit rather than a training reward or a daily habit, and whatever your dog has of it is worth taking off the day's food rather than adding on top. Ruffingtons publish no biscuit weight or size, so we cannot tell you how big five actually is.

Who it's for: anyone buying a present for someone else's dog, or marking a birthday or a homecoming — and owners who want a treat that looks like something rather than another brown bone.
