A dog cake is not really for the dog. The dog would be just as delighted with a corner of cheese and would not notice the difference an hour later. It is the human who wants the candle, the photograph and the small ceremony, which is a perfectly respectable reason to buy one as long as everybody is clear that is what is being bought.

This is an assortment of mini yoghurt and carob cupcakes, topped four ways: cranberry sprinkles, carrot sprinkles, a mini paw and a petite bone. Ruffingtons publish a separate composition and analysis for each one rather than an average, and they are not close together. The mini cupcake with the bone topper is protein 5%, crude fat 10%, crude ash 1%, crude fibre 2% at 377 kcal per 100g; the yoghurt cup with cranberry sprinkles is protein 7% and crude fat 23% at 456 kcal per 100g; the petite bone yoghurt cup is protein 6% and crude fat 26% at 455. The compositions run on cereals, various sugars, oils and fats, and milk and milk derivatives.

• Calories run from 377 to 456 kcal per 100g across the assortment
• Cereals, various sugars, oils and fats, milk and milk derivatives

They are not all the same cake. Whichever one your dog gets is luck, and the spread between them is large enough to matter: the mini cupcake is 10% fat at 377 kcal per 100g while the petite bone yoghurt cup is 26% fat at 455. If fat or calories are being counted in your house, this is not a treat you can portion accurately. Two other things worth knowing before the box is opened - various sugars are declared in every one of them and are the first named ingredient in the yoghurt cups, and milk and milk derivatives are in all of them, which rules them out for a dog that does not do dairy. No weight per cupcake has been published.

Who it's for: somebody marking a birthday or a gotcha day for a dog with no dairy problem and no weight problem, who wants something on the table that photographs like a cake.
