A 200g gift box holding four separate packs of meat treats, presented as a deli board: turkey jerky, beef sausage, chicken-wrapped cheese sticks, and chicken wrapped around apple with a hint of cinnamon. It is a Christmas present that happens to be edible, and the meat content is higher than the format suggests.

Each of the four carries its own composition and each leads with real meat. The turkey jerky is 75% turkey, the beef sausage 71% beef, the cheese sticks 68% chicken breast, and the apple sticks 57% chicken breast with 35% apple. After that they share a common structure: potato starch, a vegetable or soy protein, vegetable glycerin, sorbitol, wheat flour, salt and potassium sorbate as a preservative. Rosewood's own guidance is one treat per day.

It says grain free on some listings and there is wheat flour in all four recipes. Read the compositions rather than the box. There is also sorbitol and vegetable glycerin in every one, which are humectants that keep the treats soft, and salt. None of that is unusual for semi-moist meat treats, but a dog with a wheat sensitivity should not be given this one on the strength of the marketing.

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. Each of the four treats carries its own full composition and none carries protein, fat, fibre or ash figures. Rosewood do print panels on some of their dog treats, so this is specific to this pack.

Is it really grain free?

No. Some retailer listings say grain free, and wheat flour appears in all four compositions. We would go by the composition.

How many can a dog have?

The pack says feed as a treat as part of a well-balanced diet, and recommends one treat per day.

What is potassium sorbate doing in there?

It is a preservative, standard in semi-moist meat treats that are not sterilised. Sorbitol and vegetable glycerin are in there for the same reason, to hold moisture so the treats stay soft.

Is there anything in the box a dog should not have?

Nothing toxic. The cinnamon in the apple sticks is a flavouring at trace level and the apple is dried fruit, not core or pip. Salt is on every list, which is another reason for the one-a-day guidance.
