Woven rattan does the one thing plush cannot: it breathes. Air moves through the sides and the base rather than being trapped underneath a sleeping cat, so the bed never turns into a heat store in July, and a cat who walks away from their fleece bed every summer will often keep using a basket right through the year. It also looks like a basket rather than pet equipment, which matters when it lives in the sitting room.

It is woven rattan throughout, built as a nest with raised sides, and offered in four sizes. The weave is the whole design: rigid enough to hold its shape when a cat launches into it, open enough that the air keeps moving, and smooth enough to wipe out instead of wash. Put a folded blanket or a washable pad inside and one basket covers both seasons, the pad going in for winter and coming out again when the weather turns.

• Woven rattan construction
• Four sizes: S, M, L and XL
• Open weave for airflow through sides and base
• Holds its shape under a landing cat
• Wipes clean rather than needing washing
• Supplied as one cat nest

On measurements: Two other honest points. Rattan is a hard surface, so it wants a folded blanket or a washable pad inside for the colder months, and a cat who chews will pick at a woven edge. If yours eats cardboard and houseplants, buy a fabric bed instead.

Who it's for: cats who go off their fleece beds every summer, long-haired breeds who overheat indoors, and sitting rooms where the cat bed has to pass as furniture.
