Pointer Salmon Burgers

Burger-shaped biscuits are a training staple for a practical reason: they break up cleanly into small pieces, so one biscuit becomes six rewards and you are not handing a dog a full treat every time they sit.

Read the composition honestly, though, because it tells you what these are. Cereals lead, followed by various sugars, oils and fats, meat and animal derivatives, milk and milk derivatives, minerals and salmon flavouring. The word is flavouring — there is no named salmon content in it. The analysis gives crude protein 8%, fat 6.5%, inorganic matter 2% and crude fibre 0.5%, and Pointer's own instruction is to feed them as part of a nutritionally complete diet, with a guide on the box worked out by dog size.

Salmon flavouring is not salmon. It is on the composition as a flavouring rather than as a named percentage of fish, so if you are buying these because your dog does well on fish, these will not do that job — the protein at 8% is coming mostly from cereals and derivatives. They are a cheap, well-liked training biscuit and perfectly good as that. They also contain milk and milk derivatives and added colourants, both of which matter to some dogs and some owners.

Who it's for: anyone training often enough to want treats by the boxful, who wants something that breaks small and does not cost much per reward.
