Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.
How to measure
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
- If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Full description
Most Christmas outfits fail with cats for one reason: anything with leg holes triggers the freeze. A cat who has had their legs put through fabric will drop flat to the floor and refuse to move, and no amount of coaxing produces the photograph you had in mind. A cape avoids the whole problem by sitting on the shoulders and touching nothing else, and it comes off in a second when they have finished being humoured.
This is a plaid plush shawl in polyester, so it is soft against fur, light enough not to press a cat down, and it holds its shape for photographs rather than collapsing into a rag. Polyester is also the practical choice for something that lives in a decorations box for eleven months: it does not attract moths the way wool does, and it comes out of storage without the creases that a cotton cape would need ironing out of. It suits small dogs equally well.
