Some dogs want a toy to destroy and some want a toy to carry, and the carriers are badly served by the tough-toy shelf. This one is for them: a soft pterosaur with swinging wings, light enough to be picked up and paraded around the house all afternoon, with a squeaker inside for the moments when parading turns into shaking. At roughly 15cm it suits a smaller mouth.

The wings are the part that makes it work as a fetch toy, because they catch air and make the flight path wobble, so the toy does not simply travel in a straight line and the dog has to adjust on the run. The rest is plain soft plush, which is exactly right for a dog who sleeps with their toys and quite wrong for one who opens seams. Five designs share the same swing-wing body, so you can pick the one that suits.

• Soft plush with a built-in squeaker
• Swinging wings that make each throw unpredictable
• Approximately 15cm
• Lightweight for carrying and for fetch
• Five designs: pterosaur, manta ray, Halloween bat, pumpkin and ghost

On what this is, and is not. The product code we buy this under mentions an electric, rechargeable sound toy. The item itself is an ordinary plush with a squeaker, with no battery and nothing to charge, and we would rather correct that here than let you find out on delivery. It is a comfort toy rather than a chew, so supervise, and remove it once a seam opens and the squeaker is within reach.

Who it's for: Gentle dogs who carry, cuddle and fetch their toys rather than dismantling them within the hour.
