Cooling that needs no freezer, no gel and no plug. This is a slab of glass-like ice stone that sits a shade below room temperature and pulls heat out of whatever lies on it. Nothing has to be charged or prepared in advance, so it can simply be put down in a cage or a favourite corner from May onwards and then more or less forgotten about.

The way it works is conduction rather than refrigeration. The stone is dense and draws warmth from an animal faster than the surrounding air can put it back, which is why it feels cold to the hand. That also means it works best out of direct sun and on a cool floor; set it on a warm windowsill and it will simply equalise and stop doing anything useful. There is no gel to puncture and nothing to leak.

• Solid ice-stone surface with no gels or chemicals
• Nothing to freeze, charge or plug in
• Two sizes: 10 x 6cm and 10 x 10cm
• Wipes clean with a damp cloth
• Blue or red, in medium or large

On size, honestly. Both options are small. 10 x 10cm is a resting spot for a hamster, a rat or a guinea pig, or somewhere a cat puts their chin and front paws. It is not a bed, and no cat is going to lie full length on it. Buy it as a cool tile to retreat to, and give a hot pet shade and water as well.

Who it's for: Small pets in cages and hutches, and cats who go looking for the cold kitchen tiles the moment summer arrives.
