Guinea pigs kept in a cage the size most shops sell will sit still all day, and stillness is what makes them fat and stiff by middle age. Floor space is the fix, and the cheapest way to hand it over is a pen that goes up in the living room each evening and comes apart afterwards. Twelve panels, a bag of connectors, standing in minutes.

Each panel is 45 x 35cm of metal grid in a PP resin frame, and the multi-angle connectors let you build a square, a long rectangle, an L-shape around furniture, or a smaller pen with panels held back. Built as a square it encloses 105 x 105cm. Non-slip mats sit under the feet and cable ties stiffen the joints, which between them stop the pen walking across a laminate floor when an animal barges a side.

• Overall 105L x 105W x 45H cm as a square
• 12 panels, each 45L x 35W cm
• Metal grid with PP resin frame
• 24 plastic connectors for different layouts
• 12 non-slip mats, cable ties and a mallet included
• Open top, no roof
• PawHut state it is not suitable for hamsters or rats

Two things worth knowing. It stands 45cm high with an open top, so it will hold guinea pigs and hedgehogs but it will not hold a rabbit: a healthy rabbit clears 45cm without much effort, and even the ones who do not jump can scramble over a low side. PawHut also say plainly that it is not for hamsters or rats, and they are right, because both will get through or over a grid of this size. Treat it as an exercise pen used while you are in the room, not as a cage or a permanent home.

Who it's for: guinea pig and hedgehog keepers who want proper floor time in the evenings, and anyone needing a pen that packs flat before visitors arrive.
