Being raised 8cm off the ground is the detail that makes this work outdoors. Cold and damp travel upwards, and a wooden house sitting flat on grass or a paving slab draws both straight through the floor — which is why hutches rot from the bottom and why animals sleeping in them get cold long before the air does. Lift it clear and both problems mostly go away.

Above the raised base it is fir with an asphalt roof, sloped to shed rain and to take sun without cracking. The front door has its own ramp, so a rabbit or guinea pig walks in rather than hopping up, and it locks — worth having when the alternative is a latch a fox can work open. The whole roof lifts off for cleaning, which on a house this size means you can reach everything from above rather than through the door.

• Exterior 51cm long x 42cm wide x 43cm high
• Interior 46 x 39 x 30cm; raised 8cm off the ground
• Fir wood with a weather-resistant asphalt roof
• Ramped front door, 16.5 x 24.5cm, with a locking latch
• Fully openable roof for cleaning
• Assembly required

What this is, plainly. It is a shelter, not a hutch. The interior is 46 x 39cm, which is somewhere to sleep, shelter from rain and hide from a passing bird — it is not somewhere an animal should spend its life. Put it inside a run or a secured area of garden and it does an excellent job. Bought as a rabbit's only accommodation, it is far too small, and we would rather say so here than have it arrive and disappoint you.

Who it's for: Anyone with a run or pen that needs a dry, lockable bolt-hole in it, and owners of outdoor cats wanting a small weatherproof shelter.
