Not every cat wants to be hidden. Plenty of them sleep best half out in the open, in the middle of the room, with something solid behind the head and a clear view of the door. A bolster bed is built for that cat exactly: a soft base to spread out across and a raised wall running round the back and sides to lean into, without the roof a cave bed puts over them.

The bolster does real work beyond comfort. Cats sleep curled with the head raised, and a raised rim takes the weight of the neck rather than leaving it on the floor, which matters more and more as a cat gets older and stiffer. The base is cushioned enough to keep an elderly cat off hard boards or tiles, and the open front means there is nothing to climb over, which is what arthritic cats give up on first.

• Bolstered sides running round the back to lean against
• Soft cushioned base
• Open front with nothing to climb over
• Plush sofa-style shape
• Arrives compressed; the packed box measures 30 x 20 x 10cm
• Product weight 1.5kg

On measurements. Give it a day out of the packaging to loft back up before you judge how big it is.

Who it's for: Cats who sleep in the open with their head propped up, and older cats who need a soft base without a rim to climb.
