A dull, flaky coat is often the first visible sign that something in the diet is not quite right, and fatty acids are the cheapest thing to put back. Omega-3 from marine oil supports skin barrier function and coat condition, and the owners who notice a difference are the ones who stick with it for a couple of months. This is not a supplement that does anything in a week.

Each pack holds 60 soft capsules of 1200 mg deep-sea fish oil. The capsule form is the practical part: a pump bottle of oil measures out mess and guesswork in equal amounts, whereas a capsule goes into food whole or can be pierced and squeezed over a meal, and you know exactly what has been given. Three versions are listed, a dog formulation, a cat formulation and a plain fish oil, so check the drop-down matches the animal you are buying for.

Read this before you buy. Their copy also calls the product cod liver oil in one place and deep-sea fish body oil in another, and those are not the same thing, since cod liver oil carries vitamin A and D that accumulate. Speak to your vet before giving it alongside medication.

Who it's for: Dogs with a dry or dull coat whose owners will keep it up for a few months rather than a fortnight.
