Full description

A name on a dental chew tells you what it's meant to do to a dog's teeth, and it doesn't always tell you much about what's actually in it.

This is Misfits' Nasher Sticks, a dental chew for adult dogs. The base is cereals - maize flour makes up 29% and wheat flour 18% - with vegetable derivatives, minerals including sodium tripolyphosphate, and vegetable protein extracts. Meat appears as dried liver powder: 1.6% dried beef liver powder (equivalent to 2.2% beef) and 0.9% dried poultry liver powder (equivalent to 1.2% chicken). It comes in a 270G pack.

Maize flour (29%) and wheat flour (18%) form the cereal base
Meat is supplied as liver powder: 2.2% beef and 1.2% chicken by declared equivalent
Protein 7.4%, fat 3%, crude fibre 0.5%, moisture 16%
Contains sodium tripolyphosphate, a mineral additive used in dental-chew formulas
Formulated for adult dogs
270G pack

What "Chicken and Beef" actually means here. Both named meats are present only as liver powder - 2.2% beef and 1.2% chicken - stated as equivalents rather than fresh meat. The base of the stick is maize flour (29%) and wheat flour (18%), which puts the two named meats well behind two cereals in the actual recipe. That is a normal way to build a dental chew, since the cleaning comes from the chewing rather than the protein, but it is worth knowing before reading "Chicken and Beef" as the main ingredient.

Who it's for: owners of an adult, large-breed dog looking for a dental chew rather than a meat treat, and anyone who wants to know exactly how much beef and chicken is actually in a "Chicken and Beef" chew before buying it.

Why we chose it

This is a dental chew first and a treat second, which is worth being upfront about given the name on the front. We stock it for the dental-specific mineral in the recipe rather than for the small amount of beef and chicken on the label, and it is formulated for adult, large-breed dogs rather than any dog that chews. It is honestly a chew, not a meat stick, and we would rather say that plainly than let the name do the talking.
