The reason so many dogs hate having their nails done is rarely the clip itself. It is what comes after: a sharp edge that catches on things, or a quick that got trimmed once and was never forgotten. Doing both jobs with one tool helps more than you would expect. Clip the nail back, then switch to the grinder and take the corner off, without putting the dog down and picking up a second gadget.

The grinder is the half that usually causes the trouble, because most rotary tools announce themselves with a high whine that a cat or a jumpy spaniel simply will not sit through. This motor runs quietly, and that one feature is what most often decides whether you get all four feet done or give up at the second. A digital display sits on the body, and the ground finish leaves nails that will not snag.

• Clipper and rotary grinder built into a single handheld tool
• Quiet motor, aimed at noise-sensitive cats and dogs
• Digital display on the body
• Grinds nails smooth after clipping so they do not catch
• Suitable for cats and dogs
• One tool to charge and store rather than two

Be realistic about the first session. No tool makes a dog who already dreads nail trims relax on day one. Run the grinder near your pet without touching a foot, several times over several days, before you attempt an actual nail. A week of that does more for the job than anything on the specification. If you have already caught a quick, expect to rebuild the trust slowly.

Who it's for: Owners doing nails at home, particularly with pets that flinch at the noise of an ordinary grinder.
